At Your Money Geek, we talk about side hustles and building your own companies often, because owning your own business is the ultimate financial security.

Why risk investing in the companies of others, when you can invest in your own side business or full-time gig? Building your own business or brand will beat the return of other investment, assuming, of course, you are willing to put in the work.

It is possible to build a 6-figure business online. However, it takes careful planning, hard word, and help. Reaching out to people who have “been there and done that” can save you a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. It seems like everyone online is pitching the path to prosperity, from MLM scams to blogging course sellers, so it’s difficult to know who to trust.

Today, I am excited to share an interview with Cait Scudder, who “crushed it” building an online business and is helping women do the same. Cait was referred to us by a friend of the blog Jimmy Star, and she has been featured in Forbes, Fast Company and more. She’s the real deal.

My questions are in bold, Cait’s comments follow in plain text

Cait Scudder Discusses Success

How did you get started coaching?

I started my coaching business from my laptop in Bali. When I moved there in early 2016, it was the first time I had ever been around digital nomads and people who had created epic lifestyles working from anywhere in the world. I had no idea how I could make it work, but I got curious and stayed curious.

I took my years of training as an Educator, years of study of yoga teaching and philosophy, and personal development and invested in incredible support to learn how to turn my gifts into a business that would serve others.

I started out offering radiant living coaching sessions for women who were experiencing blocks, stagnation, and self-doubt, and who were ready to reclaim their power entirely. That quickly transitioned into business coaching, as I found that as all my clients achieved their breakthroughs, their next step was: how do I build something with this?

What does a typical day look like?

In 2019, I’ve been in over 12 countries, and there’s really not such a thing as a ‘typical’ day for me that’s true every day.

That being said, success is a habit, and I’ve made it a habit to develop my own personal high-performance routine wherever I go in the world.

I start my day with lemon water, movement (usually a run or a HIIT workout) and energy-raising music. I created a playlist of my favorite pump-up songs that I listen to every day,

I also structure my days of the week to have specific intentions for each day. On Tuesdays through Thursdays, I coach. On Monday, I have a CEO day to focus on growth initiatives in business and strategic planning. Friday is usually content creation and recapping.

Professionally what are you most proud of?

Growing a TRUE community of fierce feminine leaders and supporting my clients to achieve results and make strides in their businesses — this is the most rewarding thing of all and WHY I do what I do.

Cait Scudder on Success

What is one thing you have learned from being successful?

New level, new devil. I used to think, “ WOW, when I hit the 6-figure mark, THEN I’ll be successful. We’re already into the multi 6-figure level in July, and I realize that it’s so important to remember that there are growth challenges and opportunities at each level.

Rather than focusing on hitting a milestone, and then once you’ve hit it, immediately chasing the next, learn to appreciate and savor the growth and realize that all growth comes with an expansion.

Is there a mistake you have made starting that you wish you could change?

I waited for years because of imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and fear. If I could change anything, I’d have started earlier, way before I felt ready.

If you could recommend one book to help people be more successful, what would it be, and why.

Getting Started and Determination

What advice would you give someone starting?

While it may sound counter-intuitive, you REALLY need to block out a lot of the noise. Stop binge-consuming everyone else’s content and spend time getting quiet and getting clear on what YOU want to create and bring into the world.

Vision is the birthplace of all creation, so you need to take the time to do this, and if your vision gets muddied by everyone else’s business, you could very well end up creating a business that doesn’t look like you.

Ask yourself — where am I trying to copy everyone else? Spend time truly getting to know and understand what your niche is so that you can build your tribe and a movement that people want to follow.

Do you have any advice for people that may feel discouraged about reaching their goals?

Pick yourself up and keep going. Rather than just bulldozing through, ask yourself, “What’s stopping me?

Don’t try to be everyone else. In the coaching industry, there is a lot of ‘the blind leading the blind’ and women scrambling to imidate other successful coaches. The women who are the most successful and have created sustainable success in their businesses are those who have done it their way and created a real niche for themselves.

Social Media and Branding

What does your social media strategy look like, any tips?

  • Be consistent.
  • Share value-rich, engaging content.
  • Focus equal parts on authenticity and engagement AND showcasing your expertise and offering actionable tips for your audience that solves the problems they have.
  • Utilize live video and Instagram stories to connect with your audience.

Any mistakes you see people routinely make with social media?

Over curating their content. One thing most entrepreneurs and influencers forget is that your audience wants to be both inspired by you AND feel like they connect with you. One thing I always ask myself and tell my clients is: Does your content make you feel like your clients could hang out with you? If not, it’s over curated.

Your social media presence is the most significant way you can build relationships with your community. If you’re focused and fixated on making it a curated work of perfection, you’re missing the whole point. Yes, spend the time to be intentional and branded and professional, AND, when you make your focus on building relationships and delivering quality content, your social media will work actually to grow your business.

Where can people connect with you online?

In my free Facebook group filled with the incredible community of women entrepreneurs: The Radiant Entrepreneur

Productivity and Time Management

Do you have any apps, books, or tips that you use to be more productive?

I use Slack and ClickUp on my team to manage tasks and communicate, Google Drive to store all files, and both are a lifesaver in terms of project management and content storage. Google Calendar to organize my life!

I’m also a huge fan of audio speaking notes into my phone when I’m on a walk or run and get ideas. Some of my best ideas come to me when I’m away from my computer, and I’ve made it a habit to capture that magic.

How do you manage time?

Batching my work has been a game-changer for me. I set aside Mondays for strategic planning and CEO days. Tuesdays through Thursdays, I meet with clients. Fridays are for content creation. This has been so helpful for me in knowing there’s a time each week for tasks.

Fitness

How import is fitness to success?

Your ENERGY is one of the most valuable assets you have in your business. If you’re ignoring your body, you forget the single most important tool you have in your business.

Do you enjoy working out?

Yes! I love going for a run, but I find it incredibly hard without music. I created a playlist for myself that I now share with my community to help me feel pumped and motivated. ( playlist.caitscudder.com)

Final Thoughts

What is the best advice you have received?

Don’t get too high; don’t get too low. Entrepreneurship is a journey, not a destination.

What is the one thing you wish everyone knew?

When you feel like you’re not where you want to be, it can be so easy to look “out there” aka the internet, see all these successful people, and think, “Well, they are something special. They have something I don’t.” Nothing could be further from the truth.

You can truly achieve ANYTHING you want when you get quiet, get honest, and focus your vision on the thing you most want, and get the support you need to reverse engineer the action steps you need to take to achieve it. Start small. Stay consistent. Stay committed. When you do that, you’re unstoppable.

Thank You
